Claude Code Gets Native VS Code Extension and Checkpoint System

January 15, 2026

Claude Code just got significantly more practical for everyday developers. The terminal-based AI coding tool now has a native VS Code extension, a version 2.0 interface upgrade, and a feature called "checkpoints" that might be the smartest addition yet.

Checkpoints

Here's what checkpoints do: before Claude Code makes any change to your codebase, it automatically saves the current state. If the AI goes off track or breaks something, you can instantly rewind to any previous version. It's version control that happens automatically in the background while the AI works.

What's the difference?

The VS Code extension is exactly what it sounds like - Claude Code now lives inside the editor most developers already use daily, rather than forcing you to jump between your terminal and your IDE. Combined with the v2.0 terminal interface improvements, this makes Claude Code feel less like a separate tool you bolt on and more like a native part of your development workflow.

Why This Matters

Friction kills adoption. The developers who were excited about Claude Code's capabilities but annoyed by the context-switching are getting a much smoother experience. And checkpoints address one of the legitimate concerns about AI coding tools - the "what if it breaks my working code?" fear.

Personally, I absolutely love this, as someone who has enjoyed the helpfulness of using Claude for coding assistance and prefers using VS Code because of its simple and easy interface. This just seems like it is going to make my life easier. I personally have not utilized it yet since the extension was released in December, and I have not had to code anything since December, but I imagine I will become extremely familiar with it during the remainder of my college courses.
